Concept

What is KONUNDRUM® and what do you do?

KONUNDRUM is an outerwear brand offering customisable, adaptable and upgradable Garment-Systems™ based on a modular design approach. Over time you can add Parts to your Garment-System™ and continuously adapt it to fit your changing requirements.

How are you different from other brands?

KONUNDRUM is fundamentally different to other brands in its design philosophy and approach to material output. We do not create collections. Instead, we develop modular clothing parts that you can assemble into garments. Due to its modular design, you can constantly upgrade and adapt your Garment-System™ to your changing needs. In addition, we plan to offer services that are intertwined with our physical product offering. Currently, we are working on maintenance and repair services and ultimately want to provide an end-of-life recycling service. This will allow us to extend your garments' lifespan, increase sustainability, and create a fully circular experience.

What is upgradability?

Upgradability‘ is described as the „capability of being improved in functionality by adding or replacing components.“

Predominantly used in computing, electronic equipment and software, Konundrum® is the first brand to apply these attributes to clothing enabling continuous upgradability for previously purchased garments.

How are your garments modular and upgradable?

We divide our Garment-System™ into Parts and Layers.

Parts are Hoods [HO], Collars [CL], Cores [CR] (upper body), and Sleeves [SI] / [SR].

Layers include the Shell, made out of the Parts mentioned above, and Insulations, integral garments that connect to the Shell as a Liner.

All Parts exist in various designs and are modular. We utilize custom made lightweight zippers with high flexibility to facilitate the compatibility of all Parts while guaranteeing the performance of our jackets. The cross-combination of these various design options allows you to continuously adapt your outerwear to changing needs, desired appearances or unexpected situations. Adding additional Layers to your Garment-System™ extends its usability beyond aesthetics across seasons. All Parts and Layers have specific capabilities and functions. The more Parts or Layers you have in your System, the more capable it will be.

What are the benefits of modular clothing?

A modular design approach has many advantages over an "integrated "design approach across various product categories.

Modular clothing increases your individuality by allowing you to configure it to your specific needs. What's more, you can participate in the design process by selecting the Parts your jacket will be made of. This way, your garments can cover far more use-cases. Modularity also makes maintenance far easier by repairing/exchanging only the broken part. Imagine replacing only a sleeve torn on the elbow while keeping the rest of the garment still functional.

Thanks to continued engagement with your clothing, there is also a lot more fun involved due to its upgradeability. Add to it, change it, adapt it. Make sure it always fits your style and needs.

Why is no one else making modular clothing?

Simply because it is complicated to design. To create a cohesive and user-friendly system, you have to consider all individual parts within that system at each step of the design process. All Parts must work well together to not compromise the quality and user experience of the Garment-System™.

Advanced modularity is still a novelty in fashion because of the complex and challenging design process. Most of the work goes into designing elements that are not directly visible to the consumer. We assume that in a world driven by speed, growth and profit, most companies can not take the time to design and think in such depth.

We strongly believe modularity can solve many pressing issues within the fashion industry. We are committed to exploring its endless possibilities to offer our customers a better alternative for apparel consumption.

Compatibility of Parts

The deciding factors in determining a Parts' compatibility are the size (S, M, L, XL, XXL) and the generation of hardware (e.g. Gen 1).

The generation describes the hardware used to generate long-term compatibility between the Parts.

Here is an example:

You have a Core in a size Medium belonging to GEN. 1.

To upgrade your jacket, you would have to select the desired Parts in the same size (Medium) and within the same generation (GEN.1).

Production & Sourcing

Where do you produce?

We are very selective about who we work with. Our partners need to understand and share our goals for the future and align with our vision. All our items are manufactured in Europe to support the local market and keep supply chains as close to home as possible. We are currently partnered with a German manufacturer operating several animal-free certified factories in Poland.

Where do you source materials?

We source our materials predominantly across Europe. The goal is to keep our supply chain as close to home as possible to reduce the need for unnecessary transportation as well as to support the local economies.
